The 22nd Summer Olympics were held at Lenin Stadium in Moscow in 1980, making it the first Olympic Games to take place in a communist country following World War II.

This event was conducted under the leadership of the Soviet Union, which was a dominant force among Eastern Bloc countries during the Cold War with registered Western and Eastern countries in the IOC. In response to the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan in December 1979, the U.S. proposed a boycott to Western countries, leading to a collective boycott just two months before the opening, with many countries, including Japan, choosing not to participate.

178 Japanese athletes, who had been preparing for four years to participate in the Moscow Olympics, were left in tears as they had to withdraw just before the event. This raised questions about the relationship between "sports and politics."

◎ About Misha the bear
Misha the bear is the mascot of the 1980 Moscow Olympics. The character was designed by children's book author Viktor Chizhikov. During the closing ceremony of the Moscow Olympics, a giant Misha doll holding balloons made an appearance in the stadium, and at the end of the ceremony, it was released into the air, creating a memorable scene as it floated away from the stadium.
