An awesome mid-century modern anthropomorphic era appetizer server produced by Starnes or Gilner Potteries in California circa 1950s. This piece features a whimsical feminine winking fish design with a hand-painted face and a chartreuse green to yellow ombre glaze. The body is punctured with 24 ventilation-style holes designed to hold hors d'oeuvre picks or toothpicks. Twelve holes on each side. When in use the appetizer rests against the ceramic body to hold the pick in place. The base features a large unglazed slip-casting hole typical of California pottery from this era.
6" L x 3" W x 5" H
Weight: 6.5 oz
Good vintage condition. The glaze shows consistent crazing throughout which is characteristic of vintage earthenware of this age. There is one minute flea bite on the tip of the upper tail fin that does not affect display. No cracks or repairs. The bottom of the tail almost looks chipped in the photos, but its an unglazed surface for balance if rocked.
