A museum-quality piece of American Victorian silver. This is an authentic Aesthetic Movement Tongs Holder crafted by the prestigious James W. Tufts of Boston.
Unlike common glass-insert castors, this is a substantial, solid quadruple-plated silver cylinder. It features a beautiful "Nature Study" design—typical of the Aesthetic Movement—with high-relief birds perched among a dense thicket of scrolling vines and floral blossoms.
This has been in the same family since 1943, when it was gifted by a local physician who noted its late 1800s origin. 1943 note included!
Maker: James W. Tufts (Boston, MA)
Pattern Number: 1039 (Circa 1880–1890)
Motif: Figural Birds, Vines, and Flowers.
Dimensions: 4.75” tall including legs (cylinder is 3" tall, 1.75” diameter)
Original matching 4.5” silver-plated tongs included.
Stamped on base: James W. Tufts Boston / Warranted Quadruple Plate #1039
Excellent antique condition with patina. The tongs are in great shape and fit perfectly within the holder.
