The "Live Mortar" Miracle
This specific volume documents one of the most incredible medical feats of the Vietnam War: The live 60mm mortar extraction.
• The Event: Oct 1, 1966—PFC Nguyen Luong arrived with an unexploded mortar round lodged in his chest/shoulder.
• The Heroes: Captain Harry "Hal" Dinsmore (Surgeon) and EN2 John Lyons (EOD) performed a "suicide mission" surgery to remove the shell.
• The Documentation: Includes rare, chilling B&W photos of the surgery, the EOD team, and the post-op recovery. Capt. Dinsmore was awarded the Navy Cross for this act of valor.
