This is a 1st USA Edition hardback (1956) of the classic memoir by Austrian Anthropologist Rene von Nebesky-Wojkowitz, who spent three years in Tibet and Nepal during a period of turbulent Civil War and the Chinese Communist seizure of Tibet. The author was on friendly terms with the Dalai Lama and many Tibetan leaders, and his account is a fascinating introduction to Tibetan tradition, politics, and diplomacy at a critical moment in history. Illustrated with many b/w photographs. The binding is tight and pages clean and unmarked. Light corner bumping and rubbing of the edges of the boards. There is a .75" tear in the cloth on the top edge of the spine. The front endpaper is lightly inscribed in ink. The dust jacket has numerous tears. Smoke-free home. See all photos carefully to judge the condition.
