Harry Golden, the editor and publisher who fought bigotry with humor in books, lectures and especially through the pages of his oneman newspaper, The Carolina Israelite. Once, when the roly-poly, cigar-chomping, bourbon-drinking editor was asked how he managed to retain so many friends in the South despite his civil-rights convictions, he ''I get away with my ideas in the South because no Southerner takes me - a Jew, a Yankee and a radical - seriously. They mostly think of a Jew as a substitute Negro, anyway.'' In one of his anecdotal books, ''Only in America,'' Mr. Golden said that he once persuaded a North Carolina department store owner to put an ''Out of Order'' sign over his ''white'' drinking fountain. Little by little, whites began drinking out of the ''colored'' fountain, and by the end of the third week ''everybody was drinking the 'segregated' water.''
