This novel is about a teenage boy, Sidney Skate, exploring sex and freedom. Sidney Skate considers himself shockproof!! Sydney just graduated from boarding high school in Manhattan. Sydney is obsessed with sex & he is memorized from all the books he has read about different sex scenes. Sydney comes home to live with his mother that continues to live her fast-paced life running an ad agency and managing the crises amongst her circle of upper-crust lesbians friends. She somehow thinks that Sydney is innocent of all this, although he has been aware since a young age that his mother and her friends were different. He has played along with her ploy, although he's never let on that he knows. He spends his summer days caring for snakes at the local pet shop before leaving for college .
