Origins: The motif itself is ancient, with origins tracing back to Hittite iconography in central Anatolia in the Bronze Age.
Used in both the 15th century for the Russian Empire: Adopted after Ivan III married a Byzantine princess.
And used for Byzantine Empire: The double-headed eagle was the dynastic emblem of the Palaiologoi, the last ruling dynasty. The two heads facing East and West symbolized the empire's dominion over both Asia and Europe, or the dual authority of the Emperor (secular and spiritual).
